The Compensation Specialist

 

The Albemarle County Public Schools Department of Human Resources is actively recruiting a Compensation Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will perform responsible and specialized work related to Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) compensation programs. This position operates under the guidance and direction of the Program Manager for Compensation and Total Rewards to support the Program Manager-Compensation in developing and implementing competitive compensation programs, policies, and processes for Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) employees. 

 

The Expectations

 

Essential functions and responsibilities of Compensation Specialist include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Assists with collection of market data, job classification analysis, and consistent application of established policy throughout ACPS.
  • Provides guidance to others in the processing of paperwork and HRIS/payroll data entry.
  • Assists in conducting job audits analyze data, prepares job descriptions, and evaluates job classification.
  • Assists in researching compensation best practices, trends, and strategies.
  • Assists in conducting market surveys and data analysis to make budgetary recommendations for annual salary adjustments.
  • Serves as liaison to other localities and organizations for the purpose of compensation
  • Assists in providing HR reports and analyses;
  • Collects and provides statistical data;
  • Assists with evaluation of market trends.
  • Assists in preparing presentations explaining details of specified payroll, compensation, and total rewards programs.
  • Explains employee programs and policies, assists in planning workshops, and assists in preparation of communication materials.
  • Actively participates and supports the HR Department.
  • As expected of every employee in Albemarle County Public Schools, this position models division racial equity leadership through oversight of processes, procedures, policies, and practices that promote cultural awareness, anti-bias, and anti-racism behaviors.
  • Ensures the attainment of the goals of the School Division’s strategic plan.

THE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience

 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in business, human resources, or public administration; two years of experience of a responsible nature in the area assigned. Experience in the use of computers, Microsoft Office applications, and HRIS/database systems required. Prefer Certification as Compensation Professional. Any appropriate combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

Serves as a role model for exceptional customer service and teamwork. General knowledge of  human resource function, human resource/payroll information systems, and compensation. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of employee information.  Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to become proficient in automated HR systems, advanced software skills including Microsoft Office suite. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively and empathetically and manage customer expectations while delivering the best possible service;  ability to leverage technology to streamline processes; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and family members, retirees, payroll, officials, agencies, the general public, vendors, providers, and consultants. Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees.

 

THE PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS

 

Work is typically performed in an office setting with occasional extended periods of time at computer terminals. Occasional visits to the off-site school and county locations are required. Occasional program necessity requires working hours beyond set hours and days. Communicates frequently with internal and external stakeholders.   These contacts often require considerable skill and tact, diplomacy, persuasion, and/or negotiation. Usually, there is a need to motivate, gain support, or influence individuals or groups.

 

THE SALARY RANGE

 

The hiring range for this position is $20.78 - $24.94 per hour. Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA Non-exempt position.
