Tutors for ESOL (English Learner) Students

Part-time, Temporary position
Pay: $45/hour for tutors with a current teaching license; $30/hour for non-licensed tutors
Essential Functions With Students
- Provides individual and/or small group academic tutoring for students in grades K -12
- Tutors various subjects including all content areas, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Standards of Learning (SOL) test preparation and literacy
- Meets with and instructs student(s) in the locations and at the times designated
- Assists students to develop organizational skills to ensure school success
As a Tutor
- Collaborates with tutoring supervisor and school staff to develop lesson plans and instructional goals
- Maintains and reports records of tutoring session instruction and student performance results to tutoring supervisor
- Upholds school and county policy and procedures
- Maintains and submits records of hours worked to the appropriate supervisor in the required format within a timely manner
- Establishes cooperative professional relationships with others
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Tutors should have experience instructing secondary students across content areas. Knowledge and experience instructing Algebra, ESOL, and emergent literacy are preferred. Bilingual in Spanish, Pashto, Dari, or Arabic preferred.
Education and Experience
Minimum of a high school diploma. Candidates must have previous experience tutoring or teaching children. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree and a Virginia teaching certificate are preferred. Experience working with international or disadvantaged populations is preferred.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts
Tutoring duties typically take place in school settings including the classroom, library, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Tutoring duties occasionally occur in homes, agricultural migrant labor camps, and community settings including the public library and shelters. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 50 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide learning support is required. Regular contact with other staff members is required. Occasional contact with parents or medical professionals may be required.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
