Building Services Department Work Location: Henley Middle School Full-time, Evening Shift
Work Schedule: 4pm to 12:30am

This position performs routine work in cleaning/sanitizing an assigned area of a school building by followingprescribed cleaning frequencies. Under limited supervision, this position is also responsible for floormaintenance, furniture relocation, and maintaining the immediate perimeter of the school building. Shiftwork may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and dusts all classrooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and specialty rooms;
- Keeps building and premises neat and clean at all times;
- Uses appropriate equipment and supplies to wipe and sanitize toilets, sinks, mirrors, countertops,windows and water fountains;
- Empties trash and restocks paper products at all points of use;
- Refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing,buffing/burnishing, scrubbing and/or recoating;
- Vacuums and cares for building carpeting; Washes windows and furniture;
- Maintains building perimeter by sweeping walkways, removing weeds, trimming shrubbery, andshoveling snow. Picks up litter and debris on outside school grounds;
- Replaces light bulbs, tubes, ceiling tile, switch and outlet plates and pencil sharpeners as needed;
- Moves furniture, folds and unfolds chairs safely as needed;
- Stores and cares for all of the cleaning equipment and cleaning materials;
- Responds to a variety of requests from school administrators and staff to include minor maintenance,moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries, setting up and taking down for functions andstudent activities;
- Demonstrates and models professionalism at all times;
- Drives a county vehicle as required, following standard operating procedures associated with this task;
- Follows Blood-Borne Pathogen procedures, responds to accidents or potential safety hazards whichmay require contact with chemical spills, blood, or other bodily fluids;
- Uses various pieces of power equipment to include riding scrubbers, rotary machines, pressurewashers, drills, carpet extractors, vacuums, and specialty equipment;
- Provides custodial services at any of our schools, as needed; float custodians will be assigned schoolsto report in on a daily basis;
- This position is designated as Essential Personnel, which requires that the employees report to theirjob site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and otherbuilding;
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management for the purpose of ensuring the efficient andeffective functioning of the work unit;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment to include the operation of heavycommercial cleaning equipment such as high-powered buffers and vacuums. Considerable knowledge ofprinciples and processes for providing customer service. This includes setting and meeting quality standardsfor services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions,and safety regulations related to equipment operation, hazardous materials, and other work-relatedprecautions. Must be able to follow directions, work independently, and be able to work in a team setting.
Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public. Effectivelyresponds to routine inquiries and disputes. Utilize basic math skills to complete computation of dilution ratiosPlans and organizes daily work routine. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance withsound time-management methodology to meet strict deadlines. Ability to use specialized cleaning equipmentand materials efficiently and economically. Ability to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, andevaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions. Ability to listen andunderstand directions, information and ideas presented verbally or in writing. Must possess ability to checkACPS email daily.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, and one-year workexperience in a customer service, custodial or janitorial setting. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactoryhealth condition in order to meet physical requirements of the job. Possession of a valid driver’s licenseissued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on assignment.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Work is typically performed walking or standing. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 10 poundscontinuously, 10-25 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds occasionally. Occasionally exposed to inclementweather and adverse driving conditions. In certain circumstances custodial team members may be requiredto work independently in schools. The environment also exposes the employee to potentially hazardoussubstances. Custodians are in daily contact with teachers, students, administration, the public and otherwork-related personnel. The ability to coordinate work activity, handle complaints, express a service-orientedattitude and to get along with others is essential. In certain circumstances, custodial staff may be required towork independently in the school.
