The Work-Based Learning Specialist

 

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Responsible for leading school efforts to develop and coordinate a comprehensive program to provide work-based learning experiences for all students by supporting, planning, and prioritizing goals and strategic actions, developing common best practices aligned to national, state and division level goals and standards, measuring impact and outcomes including contributing to Division and VDOE reporting and requirements and, incorporating the Division’s culturally responsive practices and approaches to achieving equitable outcomes for all students.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develops, coordinates, and supports guaranteed work-based learning opportunities for all students;
  • Promotes a culture of work-based learning awareness, preparedness and exploration within the school by planning and delivering programming that encourages pathway exploration and workforce readiness;
  • Coordinates and plans multifaceted regional and school-based events, opportunities, initiatives and field experience trips to expand authentic learning experiences; in order to prepare students for the most current conditions of the workplace and industry.
  • Coaches and supports instructors embedding work-based learning experiences aligned with their curriculum into their coursework in order to enhance the learning experience for all students; Leads the school's efforts to develop and coordinate a comprehensive program that provides work-based learning experiences for all students, as appropriate to meet their goals;
  • Facilitates career exploration courses for students;
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with partners who provide work-based learning opportunities;
  • Provides school leadership support and supports student Academic and Career Plan Portfolio development;
  • Develops and maintains a career resource center for students;
  • Provides one-on-one career coaching for students in need of individualized support;
  • Supervises and supports students participating in summer work-based learning,
  • Partners with pathway teachers and industry partners to coordinate advisory groups;
  • Collects and reports data on career and pathway interests and all work and community-based learning experiences;
  • Provides expertise on work-based learning requirements, opportunities, and child labor regulations to school, feeder pattern, and community stakeholders;
  • Assists in the administration of career and post-secondary assessments for all students that support the District's mission and goals;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to connect with students; ability to work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, parents, other staff, and employers; ability to work independently; ability to demonstrate flexibility and initiative; ability to use technology, and the ability to communicate with members of the business community.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university is required. Must be certified as a teacher or eligible to be certified for a full renewable VA teaching license. Experience in one or more of the following areas: career and technical education, vocational assessment, human resources, workforce development, special education, or counseling.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:

Works typically in a school setting in offices and classrooms with light lifting of audio and computer equipment from 10-30 pounds. Daily contact is made with students, building principals and school staff. Occasional contact is made with parents, community groups and employers.


EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
