The Albemarle County Public Schools Department of Building Services is actively recruiting an Electrician to join our team. The successful candidate will perform responsible skilled work in the repair and installation of electrical lines, fixtures, and equipment; does related work as required. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Maintains acceptable attendance in accordance with Albemarle County guidelines. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.  Essential functions and responsibilities of Electrician include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Installs, maintains and repairs electrical power and lighting lines, cables and associated parts of circuits;
  • Installs and maintains switches, outlets, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, meters, light fixtures, electrical motors, public address and fire alarm systems;
  • Installs timers for lights, heating plants and water heaters;
  • Tests and repairs electrical equipment and appliances;
  • Provides electrical connections for machinery, installs motors, electrical welding machines and similar equipment;
  • Inspects and tests equipment, electrical control and safety devices;
  • Keeps records of work and makes reports;
  • Assumes prime responsibility for the security of materials, equipment, tools and supplies carried on supporting mobile unit;
  • Establishes appropriate safety practices for school staff and other employees;
  • Assists with providing cost estimates for repairs, installations and maintenance;
  • Moving of snow during the winter;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or vocational school and extensive experience as a general electrician supplemented by course work in electrical field. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must obtain a valid appropriate electrical license within six months of employment. Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Negative drug screening and tuberculin tests are also required.

 

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installing and repairing electrical wiring systems, controls and electrical machinery and equipment in buildings; thorough knowledge of the provisions of the appropriate Electrical Code, and of pertinent City or State inspection and safety requirements; ability to diagnose and correct electrical power, lighting or communications failures; ability to do field or shop repair on electrical equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 

Physical Conditions & Nature of Work Contacts: Performance of more strenuous physical tasks, such as: walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending or stooping; working in confined spaces; or lifting or carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds. Complex operation of gasoline, diesel or electric-powered machinery or shop equipment, requiring the manipulation of multiple controls or fine adjustments. Exposure to potentially disabling/nondisabling injuries or illnesses. Regular contact made with individuals from: other internal organization units; outside organizations; and the general public for purposes of exchanging factual information which requires some judgement or interpretation in order to be responsive to questions or applicable to a specific situation. Communication is usually cooperative in nature, with most conflicts resolved by higher authority.

 

Salary Range: The hiring range for this position is $17.98 - $23.44 per hour. Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA Non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with ACPS Board Policy, GCBA.
