The Department of Parks and Recreation

 

Albemarle County has 12 parks, which offer over 4,100 acres for passive and active leisure activities. Activities at the parks include swimming, picnicking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and boating. The Grounds/Facilities Maintenance Worker

 

The Albemarle County Department of Parks and Recreation is actively recruiting a Grounds/Facilities Maintenance Worker to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the repair, maintenance, and care of County or parks and recreation grounds and related structures and equipment. The incumbent performs under the regular supervision of a Foreman and is subject to overtime assignments and call-back emergency situations. The Grounds/Facilities Maintenance Worker is also responsible for preparing, building, field, and shelter reservations, as well as operates snow removal and emergency equipment and assists with all emergencies.

 

 

The Expectations

 

Essential functions and responsibilities of the Grounds/Facilities Maintenance Worker include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in the planning and scheduling of daily work necessary for proper maintenance of County or park buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment;
  • Leads a work crew of subordinate personnel involved in the maintenance of County or park buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment;
  • Assumes some responsibility for the supervision of subordinate personnel and assigning work schedules in the absence of the Foreman.
  • Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment, and supervises the operation and maintenance by subordinate employees;
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance functions;
  • Prepares for building and shelter reservations, athletic field use and special events;
  • Operates snow removal equipment/emergency equipment and assists with all emergencies;
  • Applies pesticides as required per regulations;
  • Assists in environmental work as required;
  • Assists in the documentation of work performed and maintains records;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

The Qualifications

 

Education and Experience

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and two (2) years’ experience in the operation of motorized equipment and building and grounds maintenance work.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Obtain a Class B commercial permit and Technician Level pesticide license within 12 months of hire.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • The successful candidate must have knowledge of grounds maintenance materials, equipment and practices; standard materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the building trades; Additionally, appropriate safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction; use common hand tools;
  • A person in good physical condition and the ability to operate simple machinery and equipment;

 

 

The Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts

 

Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying items weighing 20 to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds. Also, prolonged operation of mowing equipment both riding and walking over rough terrain. The work environment routinely exposes the employee to potential major injuries, adverse weather with occasional exposure to hazardous substances. Regular contacts with office personnel, other staff members, vendors, and park users or other members of the general public. A rotating schedule will require working weekends.

 

The Salary Range

 

The salary range for this position is $29,811-35,773 per year. The starting offer is based on applicable education beyond the minimum, experience, and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA Non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
