GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

The School Counselor performs counseling duties and other essential functions which creates an atmosphere of mutual respect and caring to foster a positive climate for learning and personal growth. Provides social and emotional student support.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Responsible for executing and exposing students to post-secondary opportunities to include:

  • Recruiting and career awareness outreach for programs to elementary, middle, and high school students;
  • Serving as member of the planning committee for 7th and 10th grade Career Expo;
  • Coordinating and executing student tours at CATEC;
  • Coordinating: curriculum night, career fairs, career focused field trips, employer interviews, and college visits.

Responsible for testing coordination and administration to include:

  • Ordering, managing, coordinating, and administering career credential exams and industry certification testing to all CATEC program areas (WRS, NCCER, ASE, CompTIA, etc);
  • Tracking and recording testing data and reporting data to base schools;
  • Ensure all special needs accommodations are provided.

Responsible for managing and organizing all aspects of dual enrollment.

 

Responsible for:

  • Developing efficient system for pupil and program appraisal, recommending changes as needed to meet student needs;
  • Serving as Student Support Team Chair;
  • Coordinates Career and Technical Student organizations (SkillsUSA, HOSA, FCCLA);
  • Serving as counseling liaison with the base schools;
  • Maintains and upholds CATEC and Albemarle County policies and procedures;
  • Maintains records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations;
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes within contractual commitments;
  • Attends and participates in faculty and department meetings;
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods;
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials;
  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students;
  • Performs related duties as assigned and required by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Requirements include extensive knowledge in career awareness, dual enrollment, testing protocols, and CTE programs and requirements. Thorough knowledge of child growth and development. Ability to build relationships and counsel students. Must possess effective communication skills and establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships with teachers, administrators, division staff, and members of the business community. Ability to work independently, demonstrate flexibility, and initiative. Ability to use technology. Ability to work with minimal direction and oversight to manage a wide range of projects and time sensitive tasks simultaneously. Ability to create environments that foster mutual respect with students and a positive learning climate.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must hold or be eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia with an endorsement in School Counseling.

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:

Duties are performed typically in a school setting. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting (possibly over 40 pounds), and other physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Occasional attendance at parent conferences, building level meetings, and division wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary. Daily personal and close contact with young adults to provide support in the learning environment is required. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, community agencies, and medical professionals may be required. Contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
