Job Summary

The Albemarle County Fire Rescue System's Training Division is looking for temporary part-time Instructors to assist in teaching various certification programs for our fire rescue system Under the direction of the Division Chief of Training, performs duties that include the completion of essential elements of course delivery, provides accurate and up-to-date learning objectives, and maintains various required training records, training aids, and equipment; does related work as required.

 

The instructor is responsible for providing professional quality work conducting and teaching courses within the prescribed curriculum of study. This work occasionally requires the exertion of 100 pounds of force, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Additionally, requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fine finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.

 

The typical responsibilities and tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with overseeing the safe and effective use of the training center facilities during course delivery and all other related duties;
  • Ensures compliance with all national standards required for training center equipment to include maintenance of props and equipment;
  • Prepares and distributes training aids such as instructional material, handouts, visual aids, and sets up audiovisual equipment;
  • Maintains detailed training program records and files for courses;
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Education and Experience

 

A minimum of Education Coordinator status or Fire Instructor I certification (NFPA 1041-I) with TtT status for the program being delivered required for lead instructor status; Firefighter 1 & 2 certification (NFPA 1001) with 3 years of experience as a required for ignition team status (compensated at the lead instructor rate).  

A minimum of Firefighter 1 or Emergency Medical Technician and 2 years of experience is required for assistant instructors.

Support instructors should be qualified and endorsed at the locality level to perform functions as necessary (e.g. operation of vehicles, medical screenings for rehabilitation, etc.).

Compensation will be based on the functional role performed during training events.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Volunteer and / or career firefighter and EMS experience required.

NOTE: The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment background check.

 

 

General Definition of Work / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge and experience in utilization of fire and emergency services equipment and procedures, ability to deliver instructional programs using tools such as projectors and visual aids. Delivers classroom instructions and demonstrates fire and emergency medical service techniques. Enforces established standards.

Work Schedule: The instructional time will be varied weeknights from approximately 6:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m. and/or weekends from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Occasional weekday sessions from 7:00 am – 5:00 p.m. may be offered. Hours are strictly determined on class size, a number of classes being held, and a number of instructors available.

SALARY:     

$25.00/hr. as a lead instructor                        

$20.00/hr. as an assistant instructor                        

$15.00/hr. as a support instructor
