Description | Technology Support Specialist Department of Technology Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Pay Grade 15
The Technology Support Specialist is diligent in ensuring students, teachers, and staff have access to appropriate and reliable technologies to engage in the complex work of enabling and supporting student learning and that the experience of all users of our equipment and systems is productive. In doing so, the TSS provides various types of support (software, training, troubleshooting, setup/configuration, finding resources, recommending solutions, etc.) for teachers, administrators, and students. Essential functions include, and are not limited to the following:
- Consults with teachers, administrators, and students about technical resources and assistance to meet their needs;
- Works collaboratively as an active and contributing team member on a variety of school-, department-, and division-level teams, assisting with testing, configuration, and roll-out of applications, updates, network hardware, etc.;
- Guarantees the availability of computer systems for high-stakes testing;
- Develops technical documentation and other resources to support teachers, administrators, and students (knowledge base) spanning a variety of hardware and software platforms;
- Communicates with clients regarding system changes and issues, problem resolution, and upcoming projects;
- Prioritizes and resolves incident tickets for specific sites and ensures all customers are supported in a timely and effective manner;
- Consults with teachers and other users to develop processes to support student learning when technical issues exist;
- Serves as project manager or provides direct support as an active partner for technology-related projects within specific sites or at the division-level, including working with Student-led Technology Teams;
- May develop and lead cross-training for other technical staff on specific technical projects or products;
- Ensures Department of Technology consistently produces quality work by ensuring appropriate quality checks occur across the organization and taking appropriate action within the department to provide solutions and remedies as needed;
- Maintains professional relationships and open communications with instructional, administrative, and classified staff to ensure smooth operations of technology during periods of standard and non-standard building usage and maintenance operations;
- May serve as the division-level contact for one or more technical projects or products.
- Responsible for inventory/asset management projects and processes within 1 to 5 assigned sites, maintaining accurate information;
- Creates, implements, and revises standard operating procedures at the school- and division-level as appropriate;
- Advises building-level administrators on technology-related purchases and allocation of existing resources to increase student and teacher access to appropriate learning technologies;
- Performs other various duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires any combination of experience and education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree that represents functional knowledge and skills within the discipline of technology. Appropriate A+ and hardware and/or software vendor certifications preferred. Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, various brand relevant certifications and routinely apply the knowledge and skills represented by these certifications in a complex educational environment. The successful TSS demonstrates exceptional customer service across a variety of user groups, including but not limited to students, teachers, classified staff, and school administrators. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ability to manage a complex work load across multiple sites; diagnose and resolve complex issues with a variety of technology hardware and software platforms; engage in creative and productive problem solving in a variety of settings including classrooms, libraries, service areas, etc. Must also possess ability to exhibit empathy, pay attention to detail, commit to tasks, manage customer expectations while simultaneously delivering the best possible service, consult with school and department leadership to prioritize projects and tasks, communicate proactively, collaborate with teachers and other staff, support users at a variety of technical levels, and ensure incidents and issues are properly documented.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Work is typically performed by sitting, walking, and standing. However, position may occasionally require bending, lifting and carrying items for extended periods of time. Work includes regular handling of small fragile computer components and large components weighing up to 50 pounds. Continuous ability to communicate by telephone is necessary. Regular use of computers, printers, and other peripherals is required. Frequent operation of vehicles for traveling to locations throughout the School Division is required. Regular contact is made with internal departments, as well as all levels of staff within the School Division. Contacts are usually cooperative, however require tact and diplomacy. Occasional need to perform urgent tasks to meet organizational deadlines. Must be able to work in small closed areas without heat or air conditioning. Must be able to work with electrical and electronics equipment.
SALARY: Hiring Range $21.86 - $26.23/ per hour based on qualifications and internal equity
Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with County School Board Policy, GCBA-R.
