The Transportation Custodial Assistant performs various routine and non-routine cleaning tasks by following the prescribed cleaning frequencies to ensure proper building sanitation. Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, delivery of supplies, errands, and mailbox pickup. Maintains the cleanliness of the spare bus fleet to include checking the fire extinguisher and monitoring preventative maintenance stickers.  Conducts the building monthly safety inspection. Adheres to the safety standards in accordance with OSHA regulations and Albemarle County guidelines.  Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Opens and/or secures building;
  • Frequently inspects building for safety and cleanliness, referring deficiencies to the appropriate personnel. Conducts monthly safety inspection and submits report to Fleet Operations Manager/or designee;
  • Works with the Parts & Service Clerks to order cleaning supplies;
  • Performs routine cleaning tasks by using prescribed chemicals and machines, i. e. trash removal and disposal, sweeping, dust mopping, high and low dusting, wet mopping, vacuuming and spot cleaning carpet, restroom sanitation, cleaning glass, mirrors and fixtures, restocking soap dispensers and paper supplies, sanitizing drinking fountains, cleaning walls, vents, chalkboards, and baseboards;
  • Responsible for the proper cleaning, care and storage of equipment and supplies;
  • Responds to a variety of staff requests which includes but is not limited to: setting up for meetings and class functions, moving furniture, and unloading supplies;
  • Runs errand for mechanics and office personnel; mail pickup, and storing deliveries;
  • Responds to potential safety hazards such as spills and restroom problems;
  • Assists in distribution and return of all buses;
  • Serves as a substitute driver; performs minor maintenance tasks, i. e. replacing light bulbs, etc.;
  • Refinishes or restores floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing/burnishing, scrubbing and recoating;
  • Maintains carpet by machine extraction, spot cleaning and bonnet cleaning;
  • Maintains building perimeter by sweeping walks, mowing grass, weeding flower beds, trimming shrubbery, and shoveling snow;
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, with one year of custodial or custodial experience required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition as certified by a competent medical authority. Possession of a driver’s license, issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the Virginia Department of Education training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Driver's License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the six month probationary period.

 

Must have knowledge of cleaning methods, procedures, and proper equipment use. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions, and have the ability to interact with a variety of individuals, to include staff, drivers, assistants and outside customers. Some knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment, and clerical techniques; English language proficiency is required per Code of Virginia 46.2-341.14. 

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:   Work is typically performed walking, stooping, standing, and crawling to inspect buses when necessary; must be able to lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds continuously, 10-25 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Safety glasses and steel toe shoes are required and must be worn when working in the shop area.  Occasionally exposed to inclement weather and adverse driving conditions. The environment also exposes the employee to potentially hazardous substances. Custodians are in daily contact with drivers, assistants, staff and the public. Occasional contact with internal departments and external vendors is required, and students when driving a bus. The ability to coordinate work activity, handle complaints, and express a service-oriented attitude and to get along with others is essential.

 

SALARY:   Hiring Range: $11.60 - $13.92/hr based on background and experience

                 Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with County School Board Policy, GCBA-R.
