The General Maintenance Worker II independently performs routine semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of County school buildings, grounds and equipment. Does related work as required. Shift work may be required. Maintains acceptable attendance and safety standards in accordance with Albemarle County guidelines. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:


• Performs painting and minor electrical, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and/or related repairs and installations; 
• Directs assigned personnel; 
• Replaces HVAC filters; 
• Operates trucks, towing equipment, tractors, mowers, snow equipment, etc.; 
• Uses standard tools and equipment of the trades; 
• Cleans and cares for tools and equipment; 
• Performs general maintenance and/or custodial work; 
• Assists with layout and lining of athletic fields; 
• Performs other tasks as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Any combination of education and experience in one or more of the standard building trades equivalent to high school graduation. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Drug screening and tuberculin test required. 


General knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of three or more of the standard building or mechanical trades; ability to supervise other employees; ability to acquire a knowledge of the methods and techniques of a standard trade, within a reasonable time period; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to acquire skill in the use of tools and equipment of a standard trade and perform basic skilled tasks associated with the field assigned.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:  Performance of more strenuous physical tasks, such as: walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending or stooping; working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds; working in inclement weather and conditions. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals is required. Operation of complex gasoline, diesel or electric-powered machinery or shop equipment, requiring the manipulation of multiple controls or fine adjustments is required. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals is required. Exposure to potentially disabling/non-disabling injuries or illnesses. Regular contacts made with individuals from: other internal organization units; outside organizations; and the general public for purposes of exchanging factual information which requires some judgment of interpretation in order to be responsive to questions or applicable to a specific situation. Communication is usually cooperative in nature, with conflicts resolved by higher authority.


SALARY:  Hiring Range: $12.20 - $14.64/per hr, depending on experience and qualifications; potential evening shift differential
Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with County School Board Policy, GCBA-R.
