The Maintenance Mechanic I is an entry level mechanic position. The employee works in a developing capacity with increased responsibility for performing a wide range of maintenance mechanic assignments. Under general supervision performs responsible semi-skilled work in the servicing, repair and maintenance of buildings and associated equipment. Shift work may be required. May be responsible for supervising less skilled workers. This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.  Essential functions include, and are not limited to the following:

  • Assists in the in the maintenance and minor repair to HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and carpentry systems and equipment;
  • Repairs windows and doors;
  • Installs ceiling, floor tiles, bulletin boards, and weather stripping;
  • Repairs roofs, gutters and downspouts;
  • Replaces locks, door closures and screens;
  • Performs painting assignments including applying primer and finish paint per paint manufacturer specifications;
  • Performs basic work in plumbing and mechanical repairs and installation;
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance on equipment;
  • Replaces HVAC filters;
  • Maintains appropriate service and repair records;
  • Moves and relocates office furniture, makes adjustment to desks, chairs and files;
  • Performs snow/ice removal duties during the winter;
  • Makes recommendations for conservation of energy;
  • Adheres to safety standards in accordance to Department's safety manual;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the Building Services, and satisfactory completion of the first and second year of approved Apprenticeship Program, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Drug screening and tuberculin test is required. Must possess a valid drivers' license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.


General knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance work with thorough knowledge of methods, tools and equipment of two of the standard building trades; basic knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with work; ability to use basic test meters, read simple building prints, research parts and materials for repair projects; ability to follow oral and written communication.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
  Work involves frequent walking, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently works from ladders, in cramped spaces, in dusty conditions, and in inclement weather; regular contact with office personnel, other staff members, vendors, individuals from other departments and the general public. Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries, occasional exposure to hazardous substances. Work requires dexterity in using of both hands, hand-eye coordination and processing basic mechanical sequence of events.

               

SALARY:  Hiring Range: $13.09 - $15.71/per hour based on experience and internal equity     
                Full Range: $13.09 - $21.37/ per hour based on experience and internal equity

               Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with County School Board Policy, GCBA-R.
