GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Responsible for assisting in the administration of all aspects of the Summer Immersion Excursion program (https://www2.k12albemarle.org/dept/instruction/esol/Pages/Summer-Immersion-Excursion.aspx), a grant-funded, partnership program between Albemarle County Public Schools and Charlottesville City Schools, by providing educational leadership for newly-arrived English Learners in grades 5-9 and staff.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists the ESOL Leach Coach, in partnership with the ESL Coordinator of Charlottesville City, with all aspects of administering the summer program including:

  • Organizing and conducting panel interviews (January–February)
  • Providing leadership in teacher orientation, team-building, and curriculum planning prior to the summer (March–June)
  • Assisting teachers in curriculum development, planning field trips and using community resources;
  • Assisting teachers in ordering of necessary instructional materials and equipment;
  • Providing a climate conducive to effective communication through meetings, phone calls, emails, and face-to-face contacts;
  • Supervising the implementation of curriculum, educational objectives, and weekly field trips, that are consistent with program goals;
  • Conducting daily instructional supervision of staff and students during the program dates, including teaching students about acceptable student behavior in US schools;
  • Assisting in establishing and maintaining effective school/community relations by developing collaborative working relationships with school sites -- County, City, and University of Virginia’s Curry School
  • Supervising record keeping, including daily student attendance, weekly teacher timesheets, and field trip permissions
  • Supervising breakfast, lunch, and school bus arrival and departure
  • Supervising the use of the school and grounds in collaboration with the Charlottesville City schools;
  • Communicating with parents by means of letters, telephone and personal contacts;
  • Assisting the ESOL Lead Coach and Charlottesville ESL Coordinator in developing summary reports for grant funders
  • Performing related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of best practices in education, language development, and culturally responsive pedagogy necessary for non-native English speakers; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents; fluency in one or more languages other than English is a plus.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Meeting endorsement requirements for school principal and English as a Second Language (ESL) in the State of Virginia required unless applicant has significant experience in education for adolescent immigrant students.


Candidates who would like to use this experience to gain administrative internship hours, instead of payment, will also be considered.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:

School administrative work typically performed in a school setting to include classrooms, cafeteria and recreational areas. Regular coordination with school bus scheduling requiring outside activity in frequent inclement weather is necessary. Daily liaison activity throughout the school building and grounds is necessary. Daily contact is made with students, teachers and school administrators. Regular contact is made with parents and the community. These contacts may be non-cooperative. Regular contact is made with the school division staff.

 


EVALUATION:

Will be evaluated annually on the ability and effectiveness to carry out the above responsibilities as outlined.
