1 year grant funded position, with possibility of renewal for additional year dependent on grant funding

 

The Victim/Witness Advocate is responsible for assisting Victim/Witness Program staff in administering the Victim/Witness Program to include direct services and clerical support.  Position receives general supervision.

 

The Victim/Witness Assistance Program is a unit within the Investigations Division of the Albemarle County Police Department.  The Program was established in 1983 and currently has a staff of three full-time employees.  The Program provides comprehensive services to crime victims in accordance with Virginia Code 19.2-11.01 as well as guidelines set by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).  Funding for the Victim/Witness Program is provided, in part, by a grant administered by DCJS. 

 

EXPECTATIONS

 

Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides written materials to victims and witnesses which explain Program services and how to access those services;
  • Maintains victim/client database;
  • Prepares written correspondence;
  • Answers the telephone and responds to requests for information;
  • Gathers restitution information and prepares it for court;
  • Assists victims in completing claims with the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund;
  • Accompanies victims to court;
  • Provides referrals to appropriate community resources;
  • Assists victims in preparing Victim Impact Statements;
  • Provides victims with information and assistance to facilitate the judicial process;
  • Performs administrative and clerical functions;
  • Assists victims in filing for and obtaining protective orders; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Graduation from high school or its equivalency.  Additional education, experience or training relevant to victim services or human services is preferred.  Clerical experience also preferred.

 

Ability to assist clients by providing information, to perform complex clerical tasks, to work effectively with people. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and security of records; ability to follow complex procedures.  Skills in communicating clearly in both oral and written form.  Proficiency in using current Windows applications.  Must be fluent in the Spanish language.  SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS A valid Virginia driver’s license may be required.

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS

 

Combination of office work and working directly with people.  Possibility of meeting people in their homes, transporting them to meetings and court.  Regular contact with victims who may be in crisis, daily contact with Police Department and Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office staff.  Also regular contact with members of other community agencies.  In addition, a service dog is housed in the Victim/Witness Program office.

 

HIRING SALARY RANGE: The hiring salary range is $12.47 - $15.00 per hour depending on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. The position also provides part-time benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with part-time employer contribution, and employer-paid life insurance. This is a temporary/contract part-time, FLSA non-exempt position.
