The Maintenance Mechanic III - Plumbing is an advanced level maintenance mechanic position with emphasis on plumbing tasks. Individuals work independently to perform advanced, skilled work in the servicing, repair and maintenance of school facilities and associated equipment; quality to be near journeyman level; possesses an advanced knowledge in of the plumbing trade and working knowledge of plumbing installations and repairs; Shift work may be required. Supervision is exercised over less skilled workers. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.  Essential functions include, and are not limited to the following:

  • Performs advanced, skilled work in the plumbing specialty;
  • Assists in the troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of facility equipment and systems;
  • Installs and repairs plumbing lines and fixtures;
  • Establishes appropriate safe practices for school staff and other employees;
  • Provides cost estimations for repairs, installation and general maintenance services;
  • Checks, repairs and adjusts a variety of water carrying pumps;
  • Prepares boilers for inspection and performs maintenance as required;
  • Replaces boiler and cut-off valves;
  • Answers complaints and makes repairs to plumbing fixtures and equipment, such as faucets, faucet washers, toilets, water fountains, sinks, drains, valves and water lines;
  • Unstops drain lines and reseals bowls;
  • Evaluates heating complaints and performs minor repairs, such as replacing traps and control valves;
  • Participates in the County energy conservation program by performing scheduled preventive maintenance on designated plumbing fixtures;
  • Serves as a resource person during absence of Foreman;
  • Adheres to safety standards in accordance to Department's safety manual;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and five years experience in the plumbing trade or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Negative tuberculin test is required. Must possess driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Preferable, but not required, a plumbing journeyman’s card, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

 

Must possess a working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance work and in the installation and repair of sanitary plumbing fixtures and related lines and equipment; a thorough knowledge of, applicable code requirements, occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with work; ability to repair or replace lines and fixtures, skill in the use of plumbing and pipe fitting tools; ability to communicate orally and in writing. Have a general knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, and be familiar with reading blueprints. Must have a thorough knowledge of the buildings systems including one or more of the following systems: water, sewer, sprinkler, and be very familiar with the work order system; advanced knowledge of methods, tools and equipment of the plumbing trade.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:  Work involves frequent walking, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently works from ladders, in cramped spaces, in dusty conditions, and in inclement weather; regular contact with office personnel, other staff members, vendors, individuals from other departments and the general public. Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries, occasional exposure to hazardous substances. Work requires dexterity in using of both hands, hand-eye coordination and processing basic mechanical sequence of events.

 

SALARY: Hiring Range: $15.08 - $18.09/per hour, based on qualifications and internal equity
               Full Range: $15.08 - $24.60/per hour
               Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with County School Board Policy, GCBA-R.
