TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS SPECIALIST Transportation Department

The Transportation Operations Specialist performs responsible skilled work in providing guidance and direction to school buses and other vehicles; monitors, collects and relays information to and from multiple sources. Serves as liaison for routing and all driver communications. Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Communicate with fleet vehicles via two way radio; • Assist customers in person, via phone and e-mail regarding bus routes and status of operations; make necessary calls for drivers to parents or schools; • Send e-mail to schools daily for sub bus driver and bus number information; • File pre-trip inspection forms, discharge forms and manifest forms, etc.; copy of bus route manifest for drivers as needed; create spreadsheets for dispatch and enter data; fax or e-mail manifest to schools for sub drivers; • Collects accident information and contacts the proper authorities; notify VDOT of road hazards; • Drive a vehicle or serve as transportation assistant when needed; • Monitor operations using the global positioning satellite system and report to administration; monitor radio to ensure compliance with government and local regulations; collect information from a variety of sources and compile data for monthly reports; • View and archive security videos; convert to email form to submit to the school administrators and department staff; • Maintain daily absentee log; schedule substitute drivers and assistants; compute and submit necessary working hours or substitute bus drivers and transportation assistants; explain maps to substitute drivers; • Notify drivers/assistants of route and pay changes and get their signatures; • Communicate with school personnel to keep student files updated; update student information in data base; • Direct drivers when student issues arise; • Keep a daily log of major highlights of the operational day including key radio transmissions as well as telephone conversations; • Maintain computer filing system for school bus and car pre-trip inspection forms; • Maintain a hard-copy filing system for lead driver cover sheets and bus discipline referrals; • Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education experience equivalent to graduation from high school and at least one year of related experience, to include basic computing skills; four or more years experience as a school bus driver is desirable; Commercial Drivers' License (CDL) required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health conditions as certified by competent medical authority.
Knowledge of State and Local laws and regulations regarding pupil transportation and FCC regulations and etiquette regarding operation of a two-way radio system; Ability to operate audio-visual, multi-line phone, GPS and other office equipment; Knowledge of department bus routes and schedules, County of Albemarle, and school site locations; Ability to communicate effectively; Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department staff, drivers and assistants; and the ability to organize and coordinate the work of the drivers and assistants.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Work is typically performed between an office setting and/or a department vehicle. Frequent contact with department staff, other County and School employees, Virginia Department of Transportation, parents and students is required.
SALARY: Hiring Range: $14.04 - $16.85/hr based on experience and qualifications. Internal candidates may receive pay adjustments in accordance with County School Board Policy, GCBA-R.
