GENERAL MAINTENANCE HELPERS
Building Services Department

Full-Time, Summer, Temporary Position

 

The General Maintenance Helper performs routine semi-skilled work, assisting in the repair and maintenance of County Schools and equipment, including mowing and painting. Maintains acceptable attendance and safety standards in accordance with Albemarle County guidelines.  This position is designated as “Essential Personnel”, which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow or weather-related conditions.  Shift work may be required.  Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

• Assists a skilled worker in making electrical, carpentry, painting, mechanical and related  repairs and installations;
• Performs maintenance and installations compatible to apprenticeship skills as required;
• Assists in one specific skilled trade and may serve as helper in several trades;
• Uses standard tools and equipment of the trades;
• Cleans and cares for tools and equipment;
• Performs general laboring and custodial tasks such as painting, weed eating, cutting grass, debris removal and clean-up as a result of maintenance efforts;
• Performs other tasks as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  General knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of one of the standard building or mechanical trades; ability to acquire a knowledge within a reasonable time period of the methods and techniques of a standard trade; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to acquire skill in the use of tools and equipment of a standard trade and perform basic skilled tasks associated with the field assigned.  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade and some experience in one or more of the standard building trades.  High school graduation is desirable.  Must have the ability to communicate effectively and must be at least 16 years old.  SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Negative drug screening and tuberculin test is required.  Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license.

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Regular contacts made with individuals from other internal organization units, outside organizations, and the general public for purposes of exchanging factual information which requires some judgment or interpretation in order to be responsive to questions or applicable to a specific situation.  Communication is usually cooperative in nature with most conflicts resolved by higher authority.  Performance of more strenuous physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending or stooping, working in confined spaces or lifting or carrying items weighting 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighting over 100 pounds and working in inclement weather conditions.  Complex operation of gasoline, diesel or electric-powered machinery or ship equipment, requiring the manipulation of multiple controls or fine adjustments.  Exposure to potentially disabling/non- disabling injuries or illnesses.

 

SALARY:  $9.41/hr to $12.00/hr, depending upon experience
