The Laborer performs routine semi-skilled work maintaining parks, grounds and buildings.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- loads and unloads dirt, timber, chemical, refuse and other materials;
- operates riding and push mowers, cuts and trims grass, prunes and cuts trees and shrubs;
- cleans facilities and adjacent areas;
- operates truck, transports and works with crews engaged in semi-skilled repair maintenance and custodial activities;
- performs carpentry and concrete work, paints and any other related tasks;
- maintains equipment; aids in traffic control.
QUALIFICATIONS: Some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment; some knowledge of traffic laws and regulations; some knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in equipment operation; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade and some experience in the operation of automotive equipment and the performance of manual labor; must possess a valid Virginia driver's permit.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying items weighs 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds. Also, prolonged operation of mowing equipment both riding/ walking over rough terrain. Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries and adverse weather, with occasional exposure to hazardous substances. Some contact with office personnel, other staff members, vendors and park users is required.
SALARY: $9.00 - $10.00/hour, depending on experience.
